General information for Dosbarth Gwyn

PE will take place every Monday – PE kit to be kept in school in lockers (plain white t shirt or polo shirt, black jogging bottoms or shorts, trainers).
Please return home reading books once your child has read the book and a parent has signed the yellow reading record. The children can return their book daily if they have read it.
We are a healthy school so ask for water bottles and a healthy snack for break time. Please cut grapes into quarters.
Please could all belongings be labelled, including jumpers and cardigans.

Learning in Year 2

Literacy

Throughout the year, pupils will continue to develop their reading and writing skills through Read Write Inc , alongside handwriting and a range of writing tasks across different contexts. As children complete the Read Write Inc phonics programme, they will transition onto a structured writing journey, where they will apply their skills more independently. They will also take part in guided reading sessions to further develop their comprehension, fluency and understanding of a wide range of texts.

Maths

In Year 2 we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work. We continue to support children through practical activities and visual representations to deepen their understanding and confidence. Throughout the year, pupils will develop their knowledge of place value within 100, addition and subtraction using a range of strategies, and begin to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. They will also explore fractions, including halves, quarters and thirds, and learn about measurement, including length, mass, temperature, capacity and time. Geometry is covered through work on 2D and 3D shapes, as well as position and direction, and children will begin to interpret and construct simple data charts and graphs.

Topic

Across the year, pupils will explore a range of engaging topics within Science and Technology, Expressive Arts and Humanities. Alongside this, they will take part in three wellbeing units focusing on understanding happiness, healthy lifestyles and making positive choices to support the development of both their physical health and emotional wellbeing.
