Oracy
Oracy is taught through a range of planned and purposeful speaking and listening activities that are embedded across the curriculum. Children are encouraged to express their ideas clearly, listen actively, and respond thoughtfully in both formal and informal settings. Strategies such as talk partners, group discussions, drama, storytelling, and class debates help pupils develop confidence, vocabulary, and effective communication skills. Teachers model good speaking and listening, use sentence stems and vocabulary prompts, and create a supportive environment where every child feels heard. Regular opportunities for presentations, role play, and reflection ensure that oracy is not only a skill to be practised but a vital tool for learning.
Reading
Reading is taught through a systematic approach beginning with the Read Write Inc. phonics programme, where children learn to decode, blend, and build confidence in early reading. As their phonics knowledge strengthens (by the end of Year 2), children progress to guided reading sessions, where they develop comprehension skills, fluency, and the ability to discuss texts in greater depth. Children are given home reading books closely matched to their phonics level, enabling them to practise and reinforce their reading at home with family support. To further foster a love of reading, we actively encourage visits to the local library and promote reading a wide variety of books at home. By combining structured teaching with opportunities for choice and enjoyment, we aim to develop fluent, enthusiastic, and independent readers.

Writing
Writing is taught progressively across the primary school, beginning with a strong foundation in phonics through the Read Write Inc. programme. Children learn to form letters correctly, segment words to spell, and build sentences using phonetic knowledge and high-frequency words. As fluency develops, children move on to a broader writing journey approach (by the end of Year 2), where writing is taught through rich texts, purposeful talk, and modelled examples. This journey includes planning, drafting, editing, and publishing, enabling children to write in a range of genres and for different audiences. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are embedded throughout through Read, Write, Inc spelling programme. Children are encouraged to develop their own voice and style as writers. This structured yet creative approach ensures writing is meaningful, coherent, and closely linked to reading and speaking.
